Who I Am

Heather Dewell

My name is Heather Dewell. As a counsellor with two young adult children, one of whom is non-binary and has autism, and the other who has dyslexia and ASD tendencies, I bring a wealth of personal and professional experience to my practice. I have witnessed first hand the unique challenges and strengths that come with neurodiversity, and I am committed to providing a safe, inclusive, and affirming space for all of my clients.

Having experienced a happy marriage, I believe that healthy relationships are the foundation of a fulfilling life. I understand the importance of fostering strong and positive connections, both within ourselves and with others, and I am determined to help my clients achieve this.

In my counselling practice, I use an integrative approach that is tailored to the individual needs and goals of each person, with you in the driving seat. I have a wide range of experience working with young adults on the autism spectrum, as well as those with dyslexia and other learning differences. I believe that everyone has the potential to thrive and reach their full potential, and I am dedicated to helping my clients achieve this.

As a parent, I understand the importance of supporting young adults as they navigate the transition to independence and adulthood. I am dedicated to providing my clients with the tools and skills they need to build and maintain healthy relationships, both in their personal and professional lives. I am further committed to working collaboratively to provide resources and support that promote holistic wellbeing and success. I believe that by fostering a culture of empathy and understanding, we can create a more inclusive and accepting society for all.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, travelling, and engaging in creative pursuits. I believe that self-care is an essential component of maintaining mental and emotional health, and I encourage my clients to prioritise this as well. I believe that by focusing on our own happiness and wellbeing, we can create a positive ripple effect in our relationships and in the world around us.

What is counselling?

Counselling is a collaborative process where a trained professional helps individuals or couples explore their thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, and work towards personal growth, improved mental health, and overall well-being.

What issues can be addressed through counselling?

Counselling can address a wide range of issues including depression, anxiety, stress, relationship problems, grief, trauma, addiction, self-esteem, career concerns, and personal development.

How long does counselling typically last?

The duration of counselling varies depending on the individual's needs and goals. It can range from a few sessions to several months or longer, depending on the complexity of the issues being addressed.

Is counselling confidential?

Yes, counselling sessions are confidential, which means that information shared between the counsellor and client remains private. However, there are legal and ethical limitations to confidentiality, such as situations involving imminent harm to self or others.

How do I know if counselling is right for me?

If you're experiencing emotional distress, facing challenging life circumstances, or seeking personal growth, counselling can be beneficial. It's helpful to consult with a counsellor to determine if their expertise matches your needs and if you feel comfortable working with them.

What can I expect in my first counselling session?

The first counselling session usually involves discussing your concerns, goals, and history. The counsellor may ask questions to gather relevant information and understand your needs better. It's also an opportunity to establish rapport, clarify expectations, and discuss the therapeutic process.

Can I bring up any topic in counselling?

How often should I attend counselling sessions?

The frequency of counselling sessions depends on your specific needs and preferences. Initially, weekly sessions are common, but the frequency may decrease as progress is made. Your counsellor will work with you to determine an appropriate schedule.

What is the policy for missed appointments?

Missed appointments with less than 24 hours' notice will be charged the full session price.

What if I don't feel comfortable with my counsellor?
